Plantain Stew
“The plantains sucked to cut up.” He placed the phone down and left it on speaker phone. “But that’s all done. I’ve added it to the slow cooker.”
Despite the crackle of static, an authoritative voice echoed across his kitchen. “And the rice?”
He opened up the rice cooker, and the smell of newly cooked rice wafted it. “Already done, Mother.” He smiled and added, “And don’t worry. There’s an extra cup of water in there, as you always say I should add.”
He heard a noise at the doorway and turned to check what it was. “Give me a second, as I think someone just came in-” He stopped short when he saw his mother walk in the flat, phone in one hand and groceries in the other. Speechless as he was, he winced as she smacked him on the head with her phone.
“Stop staring at me and get the green onions here to chop them up. Your father decided that he wanted to come too, so hurry.”
A slow smile crept up his lips as he watched her drop the groceries on the counter and grab a pot. She saw this and smacked him again.
“Do as I say. I will not have my future daughter-in-law come here later and eat a lowly meal. What will she think of us? Work.”
With a grin, he began chopping.
