A Garden of Flowers

“So… you made it. You actually have your very own house with your very own garden.”

He turned away from the gardenias he was planting, and looked towards the one who spoke. It was his sister’s best friend, dressed in a white sundress and looking at the lush greenery that he painstakingly shaped with care and diligence.

A slow smile appeared on his lips, and he felt a surge of pride and embarrassment. “I guess I did. I told you I would plant flowers here for you, too.” He pointed at the rose bushes, chrysanthemums, and gardenias by his feet.

She grinned and clasped his gloved hands in hers. “And so you did. You’re so sweet. I am so happy for you.”

He blushed. “I’m happy for me, too.”

She playfully punched his arm. “Oh, shut up. Is your sister in?”

His smile faltered, but he managed to keep his voice level. “Yes.”

Her eyes lit up brightly. “Wonderful. I’ll talk to you later, all right? Then you can tell me all about the flowers.” She ran inside the house, bursting with the excitement of a long-lost best friend.

He looked after her longingly. With a sigh, he turned back to his garden and wondered what other flowers the girl in the white sundress would like to see there.
