Early Morning Break

She stared at the blinking light on her screen and sighed.

With a slow movement, she took up her coffee mug and got up from her chair. She shuffled quietly towards the balcony doors, hoping her movements wouldn’t disturb the other members of her household who lay sleeping as she worked. Try to work, anyway, since inspiration was failing her and she could not squeeze another word from her fingertips.

The door slid open with a sigh, and she was greeted by a kiss of the early morning air. She shivered a bit in her pajamas, but stepped forward, wrapping both of her hands around her hot mug.

She soon reached the ledge, and set her coffee down on it carefully. Resting her head in her hands, she looked out at the dark streets, which were peppered with the occasional busted street lamp and fast-moving car.

Most of the city was quiet at this time, tired and dreaming. She too was tired and dreaming, but she had to keep herself awake at night, every night to realize her own goals. At least, that’s what she told herself during times like this, when writer’s block came to her and she yearned for something else to do.

She yawned and stretched her hands high above her head. Just then, light peeked from the horizon, bringing a tinge of color into her darkened world. She took a sip of her coffee and held it in her hands as the morning rays slowly brought to light the city streets, which were now peppered with the occasional street vendor and roaring jeepney.

It was just a matter of time now, just a matter of time until she too could – would – get her own break. She smiled to herself as she picked up her mug and went back inside.
