Unexpected

Life is peppered with fleeting yet unexpected joys. It is just a matter of being open to the experience and the happiness of a moment.

Take, for example, the day I met her.

She stepped into my life in the middle of a wonderful autumn day. The coffee shop was playing a subtle bossa nova track, a fitting tune to the quiet murmurs of a busy workday, to the quickening pace of my lovestruck heart.

Her gorgeous black locks tumbled messily from her head. A black beret was sitting lopsided on her hair, a fitting crown for a modern-day princess. Chocolate brown eyes shone behind her thick frames. Her kissable pink lips were slightly parted, as she tried to catch her breath.

‘Beautiful,’ I whispered, hoping my silent admiration would reach her ears, which held on to worn out red earphones and handmade cake slice earrings.

She approached the bar, her cracked black nail polish reflected on the gleaming counter. The barista looked at her with indifference as she gave out her order, a dry mocha cappuccino. She crossed her arms, waiting, a faded ballerina slipper tapping wildly on the floor.

All I wanted to do was take her hand, hold her close, and let her know everything was going to be okay. I would listen to her complaints, kiss her furrowed brow, and let her, my princess, forever reign my heart.

Her eyes then met mine, and the world seemed to stand still. It may have lasted for a second before her attention flitted away, but her intensity was intoxicating, too much for my soul to take.

She then abruptly turned to the barista, who gave her a to-go cup. She took it without a word and moved to the doors. And just like that, she was gone.

I took a sip of water and smiled. Good bye, my princess. You will never know how your step brightened my day and how your presence will linger in my heart.

Life is peppered with fleeting yet unexpected joys. It is just a matter of being open to the experience and the happiness of a moment.
