Sign

She looked to the clouds and traced her finger on the path left behind by the jet plane. Tears fell from her eyes as she signed her name in the sky.

As she got up from her spot in the grass, she felt the first few drops pour. She ran to her car and immediately turned on the heat when she got in. With a sigh, she looked out and waited to sign her name against the condensation that formed on the other side of the window.

She got home and dropped her keys in a bowl. That was when she noticed how grimy the counter was. She absentmindedly signed her name in the dust.

She heard voices coming from the dining room. Ah, they got here earlier than she expected. She fingered her gold ring and signed her name repeatedly on her palm.

When he heard her approach, he looked up at her grimly and pulled out a seat for her. She sat down, and the lawyer pushed the divorce papers her way. He himself offered her a pen. “Sign it,” he quietly, firmly, whispered.

She took the pen and stared at the dotted line, wishing to sign anything but this.
