Next to Mr. Perfect

Great, the day had just begun, and it was already shaping up to be a bad one.

I turned as casually as I could to the window seat, only to be blinded by a set of perfectly blue eyes, a perfectly chiseled face, and perfectly tousled hair. Yep, I was sitting right next to Mr. Perfect himself, the glaring reminder of all the things I lack: looks, appeal, girls.

I took a deep breath. It was going to be one of those days again. Two pretty girls just came on the bus, and they were giggling as they sat themselves in the seats in front of me. They were looking over at my glorified seatmate, who was smiling at them in his Prince Charming way. I nearly gagged.

I sighed as I saw that the bus was stopping at the next station. As this was really not something I wanted to deal with today, I debated over getting off some 15 stops early.

Just then, one of the girls – the one with the glasses – got up and turned towards me and Mr. Perfect. I turned to the other side of the bus, hoping to save myself from viewing the scene wherein the prince always gets the girl, when I heard a lilting voice speak my way.

“Hey, that’s like Butt-Head of Beavis & Butt-Head on your shirt, right?”

I turned to the voice, which came from the seat behind me. It was another girl, not as pretty as the blondes up front, but pretty in a nerdish kind of way. She was smiling at me, and I shyly smiled back as I nodded.

“Great taste.”

I was stunned by her comment, and was nearly thrown off my seat when the bus stopped. She laughed at this and got up, waving at me as she exited the doors.

I stared after her, well after the bus moved on. A slow smile soon spread across my face. I didn’t mind the giggles of the girls in front, nor the beautiful baritone voice of Mr. Perfect beside me. It didn’t seem to matter now.

Maybe it wasn’t going to be such a bad day, after all.
