Lifeless

I… I didn’t mean to do it.

The tears started falling from my eyes as I held her broken body in my hands. I hugged her close to my chest, hoping for a spark of life but finding none. I cried louder.

Everyone in the family loved her, and her smiles would make anyone’s day sparkle with radiance. In hushed tones, we all swore to protect her and keep her safe, but I, I…

I gently placed her on the ground and sat there, staring at her lifeless body. I killed her, I killed her.

After a little while, Mommy came in, took one look at her, and scooped me in her arms. “Oh honey, let’s go get you some ice cream,” she said, stroking my hair. “We’ll get you a new doll after I pick you up from daycare, okay?”

I smiled widely at the thought of my favorite strawberry treat and relaxed into Mommy’s shoulder, excited about the promise of a happier day.
