A Moment in the Park

They walked together in the park, enjoying the quiet twilight companionably.

“It’s lovely out here, no?” She turned to him with a smile. “I love how there’s no one else in the park right now.”

He laughed. “Must be the time of day.”

She grinned at him and gently threaded her fingers in his. “I’m so glad you can join me in my walk. I do enjoy our little moments together.” She stopped to face him. There was a blush on her cheeks and a sparkle in her eyes. “Don’t you?”

He gazed into her dark brown pupils and saw a hint of sadness reflect back at him. He shook his head and touched her face. “I do. I want to relive each moment again, and again, and again.”

And with that, he moved to kiss her lips. He saw her close her eyes to receive it, and he felt the incoming warmth of her embrace. A tear fell from his eye, and he quickly threw the VR helmet off his head.

He sat for a moment in his dark, empty apartment and looked outside the window, towards the park that was now illuminated by the street lamps. He reached for the photo he always kept of her in his pocket and kissed it. His chest heaved and he sobbed bitterly.
