Trust the Magic of Beginnings

She sat in the middle of the floor, eyeing the stack of balikbayan boxes piled up in a corner. With a sigh, she shrugged and checked her phone again. Still no signal. A little tear fell from the corner of her eye.

What was she doing a hundred miles away from home on New Year’s Eve? Why wasn’t she with her family, preparing for Media Noche – their family’s midnight meal to celebrate the new year – and singing badly on karaoke? Why did she push through with her move, despite knowing that it was possible for her shipment to be delayed?

Now she was all alone on the last day of the year, and she was feeling more lonely than she had ever experienced. She didn’t even have a working connection to message her friends and family with.

Feeling sorry for herself, she began to cry harder. Yes, she wanted this freedom, to move to another country by her lonesome to try out her luck there, but she only realized that she didn’t want to be stuck on another continent with no one to greet her a “Happy New Year!”

She cried for a while longer, letting it all out until her sobs quietly died down.

She took a deep breath. “Nothing you can do now but make the best of things,” she murmured to herself. She eyed her phone again, this time paying careful attention to the quote on her phone’s lock screen.

“And suddenly you just know… it’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.”

She stared out the window and smiled slowly. She supposed it was time to trust in this magic, then.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated, and messages slowly started pouring in. There were worried ones from family, excited ones from friends, and a message from her network, apologizing for any delays.

She laughed out loud and shook her head. With a happier heart, she unlocked her phone and started going over her notifications.
