Outside
Leaning back, she took a sip of her Italian strawberry soda and sighed. Maybe it’s just her luck.
From her seat outside the coffee shop, she could see couples, friends and family gathered together inside to celebrate togetherness, to celebrate having someone special in their lives.
Hah, someone special. As if she had anyone like that. As if she’d find someone like that. With a bitter laugh, she took a drag of her cigarette. She had been by herself for way too long. She might as well give up hoping now.
Just then, she felt something moving by her feet. She looked down to see a tiny kitten scratching at her high heels, mewing loudly.
A small smile played on her lips.
She placed the cigarette on the ash tray and took up the small creature. It was a small gray thing that fit right in her palms. With a small purr, it curled up in her hands.
She leaned back and looked towards the busy cafe, then back to the sleeping kitten. She stroked its soft fur.
Maybe love wasn’t too out of reach after all.
