A Great Day
8:56 AM. She was going to be late for work today. With a shake of the head and a smile, she got out of bed. It was going to be a great day.
She skipped lightheartedly to the window. Upon parting the curtains, she saw a dull grey sky pouring large drops of rain on the sidewalk. She hated rain. She shrugged it off and turned away.
Opening her closet, her clothes tumbled out in a mess. She was hoping to wear her favorite maroon dress today, but, after a bit of digging, she found it crumpled on the closet floor. She pursed her lips and shook her head with a smile, as if chiding a mischievous child. So, instead, she took out a worn but well-loved blouse and her favorite blue jeans, and moved with unhurried strides to the washroom.
She washed up as well as she could and got dressed. Her makeup bag was not in its usual place by the sink, so she looked around for it, only to find that it had fallen to the floor. Most of its contents had spilled out, and one of her compacts broke.
She gathered up what she could, placed the bag back on its spot by the sink, and took out her trusty eyeliner pencil, powder, and lipstick. After dabbing on some powder, she got to work with the eyeliner. Happy with the results for her right eye, she began to work on her left one. As soon as its tip hit her eyelid, it broke.
She stared at it a bit, amused and reached out in her bag for her sharpener, only to remember that she lent it to a friend. Laughing, she grabbed a piece of tissue as she pocketed her lipstick. She left the bath, wiping her right eye furiously.
She walked to kitchen to see that she had forgotten to refrigerate last night the milk and oats she was to have for breakfast that morning. She slapped her forehead, threw the contents of the mason jar out, and settled on grabbing an apple instead.
Biting into the fruit, she picked up her phone. It beeped loudly, reminding her that it had 10% battery remaining. She picked up her handbag on the table while going through her notifications.
Two messages in particular caught her attention, and she opened them while a reminder of her 9:30 AM meeting flashed on her screen.
“Hey babe, I miss you. Can’t wait to see you tonight.”
Immediately followed by, “My flight is delayed, but I’m coming home to you for sure. I love you.”
She grinned and slid her phone into her bag. Slipping into her boots, she walked to the door and left the apartment.
After two minutes, she came back inside, grabbed her keys on the counter, and hurriedly exited the house. The sound of laughter came through as the rain stopped and sunshine peeked from behind the clouds.
It was going to be a great day.
